You want to paint a beautiful loose painting with confidence.

But perhaps you are struggling with one of these:

  • You tend to stuck in endless detail and unable to loosen up.

  • Your painting looks muddy, and you can’t seem to get to the right color.

  • You want to control the water, but it seems to have its own mind.

  • You are a beginner, you don't know where to start.

You feel frustrated because it looks so easy when other artists paint. And you want to be like them, paint with ease and confidence, and more importantly, have fun! So you search high and low for a solution to your struggle. Perhaps that's how you found me. =)

I'm here to tell you that

you CAN do it.

What you need is

a complete system.

The course has a step-by-step painting demo for this painting and so much more.

A successful painting has multiple qualities.

A good watercolor painter has solid grasps on different aspects of painting, they have a good fundamental drawing skill, they know good water and paint ratio to make clean washes, they can mix colors with ease, and they understand visual language to paint a good loose painting.  This is why you need a complete system to do a successful watercolor painting.

“As a professional illustrator, I wish I could have taken this course. Eric made the fundamentals of drawing simple and comprehensive!”
— Yuko Fukushima

I want you to have the roadmap to be a confident painter. This course will take you through fundamental drawings, watercolor basics, advanced painting techniques, and full painting demos. It has everything you need to become a confident painter. But this requires your commitment, so if you are ready, I’ll meet you halfway and guide you through!

What you are getting:

  • A complete course - The course is a complete package from fundamental drawing and basic watercolor technique to advanced painting. Most watercolor workshops only focus on doing specific paintings. While it is great to learn how to do specific painting, you need to learn the core skills and techniques to be able to paint your own subject!
  • Learn how to paint loose - If you are interested in my course, chances are you are interested in my style of painting. However, I wouldn’t call loose painting a “style”. It’s more of an artistic choice. Furthermore, the ability to make these choices lies within your ability to come up with visual language, simplified composition, and shape design, something that we will be covering in the course as well.
  • Fundamentals -The fundamental drawing is such an important element to a successful painting. I include that in my course because I believe it is a definite need for this course. While most physical watercolor workshops don't include fundamental knowledge, it is a huge part of my class!
  • Always up to date - I believe in the quality of the course, and I will keep striving for better quality content that will help you to learn to paint using watercolor. For this reason, I will ensure my course is equipped with better, more updated content, whether it’s the lessons themselves, the video quality, or a better, newer demonstration. I will continue to update my content at no additional charge.

Bonuses:

  • 20+ extra painting demos - On top of the complete course you are getting. These are unedited, not sped-up demos from start to finish.
  • How to take good reference photos - Have a good subject is the first step of a successful painting. In this bonus lesson, I will be focusing on taking good reference photos for your painting. You don’t need a fancy camera, you only need your phone!
  • Advance color mixing and blending -  Because watercolor is such a unique medium, the paint blends very differently from any other medium. The way watercolor paints blends with each other are incredibly beautiful, but the process is also very confusing to many students. In short, if you want to learn how blending works in watercolor, you need to understand the properties of watercolor. And this is what this bonus lesson is all about.
  • Brushwork mastery - A huge difference between an amateur and seasoned artist is his/her brushwork. An experienced artist will be able to paint a variety of marks with a single brush. This is the reason why a master’s painting is looking so alive. In this bonus lesson, I will be covering how to use your brush and create different interesting marks.

This is a really in-depth course and I like the way it is set up. The lessons are clear and concise so you can watch a lesson quickly and then have time to integrate it and practice before continuing the next lesson or you can binge a bunch of lessons in a row if you choose. Each lesson is simple and easy to understand so you can immediately start learning but they are complex enough that an intermediate artist won't feel bored. The course is set up into four main sections: Drawing (Perspective); Drawing (Lighting and Material); Watercolor and Advanced. In the watercolor section it starts with basic washes and mixing then you will graduate into painting a beautiful many-layered coffee scene and a landscape of a barn. Each project is laid out step by step so you don't feel afraid to try it and work alongside the videos. I really enjoyed the lessons on perspective. Previously, I have avoided anything to do with perspective because it seemed tedious and mathematical and time consuming. But his lessons break down perspective into bite sized chunks and I can see how I can use this information to improve my own drawing. It wasn't intimidating at all! I think this course is worth it just for the drawing lessons and I can't wait to get into the watercolor section because Eric is a master at this art form. I know I will learn so much from him!

I think this course is much more than just essential watercolor, because it helps beginners to "start with the right foot", showing the way to set up a solid drawing, explaining clearly how to front the difficult issues of perspective, usually unknown to most people. Going on to watercolor Eric explains in a plain simple way how to make clean washes, how to give deepness to the painting alternating in the right way lighter and darker values, undefined parts and detailed parts. The videos are all very well maid and are in real time so that you can get every single passage and see it again and again if needed. Furthermore Eric can help you in case of specific difficulties concerning the course: for example, once I was trying to apply a 2 point perspective to a figure I had found (it was the picture of a frog) without success and so I mailed him the picture asking if he could explain to me where I was making mistakes and he promptly answered in a complete and extremely effective and helpful way. I previously had attended a live watercolor course paying it more than what I payed for this one, and I can assure "Watercolour Essential" is worth all the money one can spend for it. Pietro

I've not been able to do a lot of the course with recently repatriating back to the UK from The Netherlands but what I've have done so far and scanned through what's to come has left me with nothing more to say than sheer excellence. I've collected many DVDs from famous professional artists over the years and nothing touches this. The content and step by step procedure is the best, from beginners to advance. This course is my go to and all I need. It's broken down in easy to manage steps in progression. Now I'm settled back in the UK I'm so excited to get started with this course again. Everyone should own this course. I no longer have to gather bits of information from different sources not adding up to much sense. Here I have everything in one place. Thank you for providing us with this course and all the hard work and time put into it.

About the instructor

Watercolor Artist

Eric Lin

My name is Eric Yi Lin. I was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1981. My family moved to Irvine, California when I was 14. My parents ran a successful trading company selling garden furniture with a million square feet factory and hundreds of employees. However, instead of accepting the family fortune and take over the family business with my brother, I stubbornly went on my own path to become an artist. I guess it’s the artist blood inside of me that makes me want to create something, whether is art or career path! After graduating from art school in 2007, I started to send out resumes and call companies for a job instead of settling for what’s handed to me. Since then, I worked from motion graphic design, illustration, videography to digital art for video games. I thought I was doing well when I see my name in the credit roll of Halo 5, until one day I woke up and decided that:I want to create a piece of art that can give people the same experience when they hear their favorite song. Here I am now, doing what I do best – paint. As well as running my online joint - Café Watercolor. My choice of medium is watercolor. It’s a perfect medium to capture realistic atmosphere and bring life to the subject. Café Watercolor is a place where I can have personal connection with you who enjoy my art, sharing my story and watercolor knowledge.

FAQs

Q: Who is this course for?
A: In simple words. It's for beginners to an aspiring artist. But allow me to elaborate on this a little. I am talking about stage rather than time. You can be painting for 10 years and never had solid training therefore you are struggling to reach the level you want. You can also be painting for 3 years but with very intense and formal training so you are progressing at a very good rate. If you are struggling to progress and unable to find which direction you should work towards, this course is for you.And if you just starting to learn how to draw/paint and are looking for a good system to train, this course is for you as well.

Q: Will you be able to take individual lessons rather than the whole course? I could certainly use help in specific areas but I’m not starting from scratch and have been an artist for a long time.
A: Currently, there is no plan for individual lessons. Since everyone may have different needs, it will be difficult to design a course that's for everyone.

Q:  I need to know if you can access the course anytime you want or you must attend some specific hours.
A: The beauty of the online course is to be able to access it anytime, anywhere as long as you have internet access. Upon release there will be a rich amount of content for you with updates and contents along the way!

Q:  How long do I have access to the course materials.
A: Its lifetime access! once you enroll, you can always come back and watch/rewatch the lessons. Which means you will be able to learn at your own pace and time. Life gets in the way, some times we need to put certain things on hold. This course will always be here for you. What's more, is that you will also be getting any update I make on this course for free!

Q:  This is a watercolor course, why do you include perspective and drawing lessons.
A: We are all living in a 3-dimensional space. And you need to learn how to paint a believable painting by looking at things 3-dimensionally. The learning perspective is to learn how to analyze a 3-dimensional subject and translate it into 2-dimensional space visually. So while perspective and fundamental drawing can be dry and boring. It is better to learn those things in the beginning than come back to it later on. You wouldn't build a house without a foundation, the same goes for learning painting.
